Invented by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009, Bitcoin is the longest running and most known cryptocurrency. As described in Satoshi's white paper, Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer cash system, which can be used as a decentralized medium of exchange. It's a consensus network (using Proof-of-Work as its consensus algorithm) making full digital money possible, without any need for or interference of third parties. Since its inception in 2009, the bitcoin network has not been successfully breached one time. This is thanks to rock-solid cryptographic features embedded in the protocol.
Over the years, the value of Bitcoin (as of altcoins) grew tremendously. Bitcoin kept its dominance in terms of trading volume and has been the number one traded cryptocurrency since forever.
