DEX Methodology
This DEX Methodology provides a detailed framework for collecting, normalizing, and delivering decentralized exchange (DEX) data across the most liquid Ethereum-based protocols, including Uniswap (V2+V3), SushiSwap, Balancer (V1+V2), Curve (V1 + Factory Pools), and the 1inch aggregator. This serves as part of the DEX data provided in our Level 1 & Level 2 Data subscriptions.
Unlike centralized exchanges that rely on REST or WebSocket APIs, data collection on DEXs requires direct interaction with the Ethereum blockchain. Kaiko operates multiple full archive Ethereum nodes to capture four core data types block-by-block:
– Trades (Swaps): Price, amount, timestamp, and direction, normalized with consistent base/quote pairs.
– Liquidity Events: Mint and burn activities showing when liquidity providers add or remove tokens.
– Liquidity Snapshots: Block-level pool compositions for calculating total value locked (TVL).
– Pool Reference Data: Static information including pool addresses, fee tiers, and token weights.
Kaiko generates unique trade IDs using the pool address, transaction hash, and log index to differentiate trades across multiple pools for the same asset pair. For pools with more than two tokens (e.g., Curve’s 3pool), Kaiko splits them into all possible pair combinations. This methodology ensures transparent, tick-level data for institutional investors analyzing on-chain liquidity and swap activity.
